I watched my marriage change shape without my consent. What began as “just talking” and “just drinks” slowly turned into late nights, name-dropping, and stories that trailed off in the wrong places. My wife swore nothing happened with the older tech supervisor, but her own words betrayed her: checking into rooms, going back down to the bar, then “back up to his room and talked… oh no, no, no it was nothing like that.” My sister heard it once and pulled me aside: “You have a big problem.”
The hardest part wasn’t the likely lies, or even the images in my head. It was realizing that in those moments, our anniversary, our kids, and I simply did not exist to her. Fantasy outran responsibility. I had to accept an ugly truth: some people guard the line fiercely, and some step over it when the right pressure, loneliness, and opportunity collide.
